The Year 1 Curriculum at Glen Hills!
Welcome to our Year 1 curriculum!
We teach using a variety of themes which encompass all subjects (for example, we look at Dinosaurs and this will include science, history, art etc)
Phonics and early reading is a key area which we focus on in year 1.
Our expectations of parental / school links…
We fully appreciate the importance of building home/school links at Glen Hills. Homework tasks will be given out on a Friday, to be returned on the following Wednesday, unless otherwise informed.
Please go to our Curriculum Links page for further information for parental support sites.
Reading with your child is probably the most vital aspect of ensuring children get a love of books! Ideally, a little bit of reading together should be done every day with specific questioning of the text they have read to assist with comprehension and secured understanding. Please encourage your child to take part in the Reading Miles and support them by reading with them regularly.
Phonics – keep going through the sounds – in this section of the website, you will find phonics information for parents.
Maths – number facts will be given out for homework, as well as reinforcement of techniques learnt in school. Please also encourage children to take part in Times Tables Rock Stars regularly (in preparation for the Year 4 Times tables statutory test) and ensure they have their log in details for MyMaths and Google Clasroom.Working on numbers to 20. Counting on/back in ones and twos, playing ‘shops’, shape hunting around the house, 2 and 5 times tables- the possibilities are endless!
