Glen Hills Primary School is a Trust member and Lead Hub school for the Symphony Learning Trust

Our Governing Body

Glen Hills Primary School is part of the Symphony Learning Trust (SLT), please visit the Trust website for more information on governance at Trust level.

The Symphony Learning Trust has established Local Governing Bodies (LGB) at each of its schools, which are all subcommittees of the Trust Board.  The Trustees delegate authority to our Glen Hills Local Governing Body, but retain overall responsibility for the school in line with Government legislation and policy.

For delegated responsibilities please refer to the SLT Scheme of Delegation on the Trust website.

The Glen Hills Local Governing Body has general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievements. The day-to-day business of school life remains the responsibility of the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team. Our LGB is made-up of staff, parents, co- opted governors and the Headteacher.  In addition, there is an independent clerk to the LGB.

The LGB meet regularly throughout the year to assist the decision making of the Trust board; by enabling more detailed scrutiny and consideration to school matters.  Local governors recognise the need to declare any interests in accordance with the Articles of Association, relevant regulations and the code of conduct.

Our governors would like to be as accessible as possible within the school community. If you have any suggestions for improvements, your ideas and comments will be welcomed.

Our Chair of Governors (CoG) is Caroline Smith. You can contact the governors by sending an email to the school office email address, where they will forward this information onto the appropriate governor, or to the CoG directly by sending a letter to the school addressed to the Chair of Governors or an email to csmith@glenhills.co.uk.

Copies of the minutes from governor meetings are available from the school office upon request.

If you would like to become involved as a governor at Glen Hills Primary School, please email c.smith@glenhills.co.uk to discuss available positions on the governing body.

If you have any concerns or issues in relation to anything to do with your child within the school, your first point of contact should always be your child's teacher and if further support is needed please ask to speak to the Senior Management Team/Headteacher.  Please contact the school office to make any appointments.

Name:

Rebecca Dempsey

Governor Role:

Co-opted Governor (Well Being lead)

Type of Office:

Co-opted Governor

Term of Office:

28/09/22 – 27/09/26

Job Title:

Head of Programme Development

Pecuniary Interest:

None

Professional attributes, experiences, areas of expertise and what you bring to the role:

My career to date has focused on Event and Project management, starting with gaining a Master’s degree in Event Management, working and developing in theatre and the arts, through to being a senior member of an event agency planning and running large scale events across Europe.

My role now is Head of Programme Development for a training consultancy working with brands such as Apple, The FA, Starbucks and BNP Paribas, to ensure that high standards are delivered on time and in budget, with a focus on continual improvement of every project, something that I can bring to the role of governor.

I am also very lucky that I also get to work with a range of fantastic charities in my role including Place2Be, Working Families, StreetGames and Great Ormond Street Hospital.  Working with the CEO’s and senior leadership teams of these charities has given me an insight into working with tight budgets, limited resources, the need to innovate and grow and the importance of clear leadership and messaging.

My daughter started at Glen Hills in September 2021 and I have seen first hand how she has been supported and enabled to grow, and I look forward to the opportunity to support and challenge the leadership of the school to ensure this continues for every child that attends.

Diana Tse

Governor Role:

Co-opted (Pupil Premium Lead)

Type of Office:

Co-opted Governor

Term of Office:

28/09/2022 – 27/09/2026

Job Title:

Security Risk Analyst

Pecuniary Interest:

Co-Chair of Glen Hills Parent, Staff Association (PSA)

Professional attributes, experiences, areas of expertise and what you bring to the role:

I have 25 years of experience working for the UK’s largest communications company.  For the past 8 years I have worked within Security in the Strategic Compliance Security Risk team as a Security Risk Analyst.

As part of my role, I work with major customer facing units to assure compliance with customer contractual security obligations, across the entire lifecycle of contracts.  I also implement governance and compliance to standards through several security assurance activities.

The skills I have from a professional capacity will help me in my role as a governor as I have extensive experience of implementing process and procedure, how to apply risk analysis methodology and drive risk mitigation improvement plans.  I also work to industry standards and understand how incentives and consequences management can drive behaviours.

From a more personal perspective being a parent of two children who love Glen Hills provides me with links to other parents and enables me to look at things from a "parents" view. I also feel I can draw upon my involvement as Co-chair of the Parent Staff association (PSA) and experiences of coming from a less well-off and ethnic minority background.

Overall, my main objectives will be to help to support the high standard of education and wellbeing of the children and staff at Glen Hills.

Name:

Rory James

Governor Role:

Parent Governor (PE Lead)

Type of Office:

Parent Governor

Term of Office:

19/01/22 – 19/01/26

Job Title:

Design Engineer

Pecuniary Interest:

Wife – Jenni James – Member of Glen Hills Parent Staff Association (PSA)

Professional attributes, experiences, areas of expertise and what you bring to the role:

I have lived in the area close to the school for 12 years and find it a wonderful place to live with its nature reserve, water ways and thriving community especially around the memorial hall and Library which make it an idyllic environment for bringing up children.  I have 3 daughters at the school and currently (yr22/23) they are in years 1, 4 & 6 and they all enjoy it very much.

My day job is a professional design engineer which often involves identifying and tackling the root cause of problems not sticking on a plaster. Subsequently this approach may mean helping people understand an uncomfortable truth or make an unpopular decision (a bit like the planet has to with global warming). I feel I have the strength of conviction, the clarity of understanding and also the diplomatic skills to help the school when sometimes difficult decisions are necessary.

As a child I was allowed a lot of freedom to explore and learn from experience. I do not believe children should be wrapped in cotton wool and totally isolated from risk. My two older girls attend the local scout group and as a family we go cycling, camping and walking (admittedly it’s usually to Jenno’s).

While child safeguarding is of paramount importance it cannot go so far as to inhibit a child’s physical and mental development and in risk assessments, I sometimes feel I can be a moderating voice in a world which can often be overly risk averse.

I think we have a fantastic school and am determined to help keep it that way. I am not afraid to ask difficult questions where necessary but mostly be supportive, inclusive and hard working.
