In this section:
At Glen Hills Primary School, our Student Council members are a highly valued group of children who represent the voice and opinions of all the children within our school.
Through our Student Council we aim to develop young leadership skills, whilst supporting student democracy. Most importantly, our strong team of Councillors aim to promote the well-being of the children within our inclusive school. The Student Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. The Student Council benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made.
We have an active Student Council with a boy and girl representing each year group from Year 4 to Year 6. Each member was elected by their classmates at the beginning of the school year after a short presentation explaining why they should be elected. The Student Council follows the principles of a democratic society to make decisions.
This year we have elected a chairperson - Ariana - who will be supported by the Vice Chairs - Alexa and Sasilca.
Our members take turns to write the minutes of our meetings. We note things that have been suggested and decide on whether they are ideas that we can pursue further.
The Student Council is run and led by the children, supported by a member of staff, and takes an active role in making decisions and suggestions on behalf of the children in the school.
Members of the Council meet weekly, taking part in organising fund raising events, discussing issues related to the curriculum and suggestions from their peers.
We start our Student Council meetings by looking through the suggestion box. We discuss the ideas that have been put in the box by the students. We make a note in our diary of what has been suggested and decide on whether they are ideas that we can do something with. Some ideas are things Student Council can try and implement, some ideas are things we can’t do and some things we can pass on to other members of staff/ areas of the school.
We spend time discussing up and coming fundraisers or events, or spend time discussing how successful fundraising events have been.
